Holding the Room: The Craft of the Live Event Host
The biggest live moments are carried by a person with a microphone and no safety net. The host is the only member of the production who must perform, produce, and problem-solve simultaneously — covering a delayed artist, landing a sponsor mention without losing the crowd, and making four hours of show feel like one continuous moment. Yet hosting remains the least trained discipline in African live events: a craft learned through public failure, with no formal pathway from "funny at parties" to commanding a mainstage. This workshop treats hosting as the professional discipline it is. Participants are trained across the full architecture of the role — script-building, energy mapping, crowd recovery, sponsor and protocol delivery, working with the show caller, and the business of hosting as bookable talent. The day closes with each participant hosting a live simulated segment, unscripted disruptions included, in front of the room.
